Noi and Chim,
He was released from the hospital February 19 and given three days to live. Noi and his family reside in the countryside of Mukdahan, and both he and his wife suffer from HIV/AIDS. When Noi’s liver failed, he was sent to receive medical treatment but released shortly after when doctors lost hope. While arrangements were being made for his death, Siam-Care’s director and a volunteer joined the Siam-Care Mukdahan staff on two visits. “I’ve never held the hand of someone in such a tormented physical state,” said the volunteer.
Soon after the team arrived and began chatting, Noi was full-fledge in the conversation, contributing his sarcastic jokes whenever possible. It was so obvious how alive this man’s heart and mind were, even while suffering the awful effects of such a destructive disease. The first visit came to a close and Siam-Care’s staff prayed over and with Noi and his family. Upon the teams’ second return with gifts in hand, everyone noticed a transformation in Noi’s body immediately. His swelling and coughing had lessened and his huge smile grew. Noi eagerly shared his news that he “prayed to God for help, and He helped me!” The team spent time sharing and laughing with the family and neighbors who joined the excitement. The team prayed with Noi again, and as he repeated aloud what was being said, everyone dispersed with hopeful hearts.
As the months went on Noi's health picked up even to the point where Siam-Care staff gave him a wheel chair so he could enjoy seeing the house from a different angle then only his mattress in the corner. Always tie was spend with Chim, Noi's wife who very patiently and lovingly took care of all his needs. With the help of the special nutritious milk provided by the team, Noi actually picked up some weight, his eyesight never did return.
Then in November, during a hospital visit the doctor found Noi well enough to restart on ARV treatment; however his liver and body did not cope. The beginning of December, on World Aids Day (December 1st), the team did a last visit to a very sick and dying man. Adrienne recalls “As I knelt down by his mattress I asked if I could hold his hand and he held it out, he thanked me for coming to visit again and the Siam-Care team for all their many visits. We talked together and when I asked if Noi was ready to
go and be with the Lord Jesus he faintly smiled, held my hand firmly and said “Yes I can go to Jesus now”. I assured him Siam-Care would continue to look after his wife and daughter and asked what his dreams for her were. Without hesitation he said “I want her to finish a Masters degree”.
After we had prayed together he fell in a fit-full sleep, 3 days later when his wife and daughter woke up in the morning, Noi had died in his sleep.
Siam-Care helped Chim with the funeral arrangements and stood by her and her daughter through the days after Noi's death and will stand with the two in the months and the years to come. Chim will have to look after her own health now she too is HIV positive, the daughter is in her last year of primary school.
