Recently, our very own Siam-Care’s homecare coordinator has been able to give us a little glimpse into the work that she does. Our conversation was over a glass of water in an air-conditioned room, which gave a small respite from the scorching heat that is distinctive of the Bangkok outdoors. “It’s not easy,” she remarked rather honestly, “I think we’ve become all kind of substitutes for these families.”
Void in the familes
This is true in many cases of the families under Siam-Care’s Family and Education Sponsorship program. Many of the cases come from broken homes, often without a mom or a dad – or both. What makes our sponsorship program unique is that Siam-Care doesn’t just hand out sponsorships, Siam-Care’s homecare coordinator primary responsibility is to provide ongoing counselling and support. Our staff often becomes an extended part of the family – attending graduations, meeting with teachers, speaking to doctors for those who require ongoing medical attention, and even attending the funeral of those who has passed.
My family
One girl under Siam-Care’s educational sponsorship program remarked: “Siam-Care is my mom, my dad, my friend, my advisor, and many more things to me.” This is a statement that is often heard in many of the Siam-Care’s families.
Truly a holistic approach
We’ve often heard this term used, but to see it in action, one must ask the homecare coordinators about what this truly means. It means the assistance provided by Siam-Care is not limited to just materials, but that other services are also made readily available to the families under our care. The work may be difficult, but result is well worth the effort: transformed lives, transformed communities, and a brighter future for people who may have never had the chance.
