Sar

She didn't know what else to do; her husband had left, her mother was elderly, her sister's brain had been damaged through an accident so she couldn't work any longer and Sar had a 10 year old daughter, a bright student, for who she had to pay school fees. How could she earn enough money to provide for this whole family, having finished only 4 years of primary school education, no one was going to employ her and give her a reasonable salaly. The recycling materials she collected along the road side were not enough to feed everyone and pay for all the other running costs a family has. So she decided to take the advice of a friend who had done drugs for many years and was earning a nice income from this. Surely it was safe to get involved.

Not long after Sar started selling small amphetamine tablets she was caught, and now sits out a 6 year prison sentence; what started off to help the family has resulted in the family living in even more difficult circumstances. With Sar, the breadwinner gone, grandmother goes out to collect the recyclables and earns a little bit of money from this.  She would like to visit her daughter in prison but that would cost too much of the precious little money they have.

Siam-Care got to know Sar while working in the prison and went to visit her family. Through the regular home visits to the mother and the family, support was given and friendship was established. Sar's daughter  nowreceives a sponsorship so the school costs are no longer a worry for Sar and her mother, and the daughter can go on to higher education. Through the support of Siam-Care Sar's mother has been able to travel to visit Sar a couple of times, bringing good news from home and about her daughter. This has helped Sar to get out of the depression she was in and has helped her to look after her health better, she still has some years to go 'inside' but is full of hope for the future.
