Yaay Tieng and her granddaughters;

When Tieng was a young mother she worked hard and gave her best to the children. They had to go to school, receive an education so they could have a better life then she did. She did all she could to educate them but was ignorant of the facts of life in the big city. When her children went to the big city, she supported that, wanting them to do well and earn good money. When her children sent their children back home to live with grandmother 'Yaay', she was happy to look after the grandchildren. She also looked forwards to her old age when the kids and grandkids would look after her and she would enjoy sitting around and resting after years of hard work.
However this was never to be; Now in her 70s Yaay Tieng is the one who looks after 3 young orphaned grandchildren. Her husband still goes out to the fields to work, harvest rice, bring back vegetables and eatables for the family. Two of her daughters have died of HIV, her sons can hardly make end meet for their own families so have no spare money to help their elderly parents. Yaay Tieng loves her grandchildren but is also very worried. What will happen to them if she is no longer around. The oldest is only 15 but the youngest, who is also a special needs child which severe learning difficulties and physical problems, is only just 10.
The Siam-Care team visits Yaay Tieng and her family regularly, provide a listening ear, nutritional support, funds to travel to and from the hospital when needed and recently build the family a much needed toilet.
Walking along side this family has given Yaay Tieng the encouragement and support she needed to keep going and to look after her grandchildren.
